There’s a legal way to get rid of asbestos, and it isn’t a state forest. A homeowner who takes the right precautions may remove as much as 10 square metres of bonded asbestos; anything bigger, or any friable asbestos, needs a licensed removalist (Central Coast Council). Whoever removes it, the waste goes to a landfill that takes asbestos, securely packed and booked in ahead, never into a kerbside bin or the bush (NSW EPA). Moving it in an open trailer isn’t allowed either: it has to be covered.
Give us the basics when you call: what it is, whether it’s on the house, a shed or out in the yard, and how much of it there is. Say whether pieces are broken or loose. If you live in a townhouse or semi (22.7% of Ourimbah’s occupied homes were semis, terraces or townhouses in 2021), say that too.
