Wyoming: worth knowing before you renovate

The traditional homes on Wyoming's older hillside subdivisions are modest single-storey timber-framed bungalows from the mid-20th century to the 1960s, clad in simple sheet materials or weatherboards, the Council's character statement says. On 18 May 1978 the Minister for Housing, Ron Mulock, opened the first 25 housing commission homes in the Wyoming Estate. One call to us can get a licensed asbestos removalist ringing you back.

Wyoming had 10,111 residents at the 2021 Census (ABS QuickStats).

Painting, recladding or adding a deck to an older bungalow can mean cutting or drilling into its walls and eaves. Before that, have any sheeting you’re unsure about sampled and tested (asbestos testing). Asbestos left in good condition is a low risk, according to NSW Health, but damage from drilling, cutting, weather or water blasting can release fibres (NSW Health). An owner can legally remove 10 square metres or less of bonded asbestos, though SafeWork NSW recommends a licensed removalist for any amount.

On the call, tell us which wall, eave or outbuilding you’re asking about, and give a rough size in metres. Is the surface sound, or chipped and flaking? Tell us too whether the house is one of the older bungalows or a later build. If you rent, as 24.9% of Wyoming’s occupied homes did in 2021, mention it.
